In Dali, where there rarely is snow, there's a lyrically named specialty: "Yizhangxue" or "a palmful of snow.". Made by pouring red sugar syrup over the pressed snow from the Cangshan Mountain, this snack certainly evokes sweet memories for locals like A Yue and her grandmother, who set out every spring to sell it. As they pass Cangshan Mountain, Erhai Lake, and the ancient city of Dali, the grandmother recounts the stories of "Yizhangxue" and Dali's pasts in her gentle Bai dialect. The result is an intriguing and moving oral history full of food for thoughts as sweet as "palmfuls of snow."
