An exquisite grotto from the late Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534) has been discovered in the suburbs of Taiyuan, the capital of northern China's Shanxi Province. Experts have confirmed it as the earliest-known grotto discovered in the city. The grotto is in the shape of a cube. It is carved from rock, and each side is about a meter long. Shanxi is home to more than 480 grotto sites, and this discovery offers a new chronological reference for studying the province's grottoes.
