Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed the long-standing friendship between China and Peru, expressing optimism about further advancing bilateral cooperation in a written speech upon his arrival in Peruvian capital Lima on Thursday local time for the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and a state visit.
Xi emphasized the historical depth of China-Peru relations, tracing the roots back over 400 years to exchanges via the Maritime Silk Road and the Manila Galleons, also known as the "China Ship." Peru was among the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic ties with China 53 years ago.
Xi stated that thanks to joint efforts, the China-Peru relationship has continued to develop deeply. "Political mutual trust of the two sides has been steadily strengthened, with mutual understanding and support on issues concerning each other's core interests and major concerns," said Xi.
Highlighting China's position as Peru's largest trading partner and export market for the past decade, Xi pointed to the successful collaboration in key sectors such as mining and infrastructure construction, which have delivered tangible benefits to both nations.
During his visit, Xi is set to hold talks with Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra to deepen discussions on bilateral relations and expand cooperation across various fields, including trade, investment and regional development. The two leaders will also jointly inaugurate the Chancay Port.
Xi expressed his belief that through joint efforts, the visit to Peru will lead the China-Peru comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level and promote practical cooperation in various fields to achieve new results.
Additionally, Xi also expressed hope for the success of the APEC meeting. He affirmed China's dedication to fostering an open Asia-Pacific economy, promoting global economic growth, and contributing to the construction of an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future.
