The upcoming G20 Summit, scheduled to take place from November 18 to 20 in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro, will seek to address the turbulent and changing international landscape and the complex and challenging issues in global governance.
In the view of Chinese President Xi Jinping, "All G20 members should take the responsibility inherent in being major international and regional players, and should lead by example in promoting development of all nations, improving the well-being for the whole mankind, and advancing progress of the entire world." Respondents to a global poll by CGTN strongly agree with President Xi's statement and positively evaluate China's contributions to promoting global economic growth and improving global economic governance.
In the survey, 80.9 percent of respondents agreed that the G20 is a platform for all parties to strengthen multilateral cooperation and share development opportunities, emphasizing the need for joint efforts to address global uncertainties and challenges. The countries most affected by these challenges are in the Global South. Accordingly, 67.1 percent of respondents said they hope the G20 Summit will address the development needs of Global South countries, effectively enhancing their role and influence in international affairs. Some 73.4 percent of respondents expect G20 members to actively promote international cooperation on climate governance – an issue of broad concern for the Global South – and to drive a green transition of the global economy.
As the largest developing country and a key member of the Global South, China is committed to enhancing the voice and representation of Global South countries in international affairs through the multilateral cooperation mechanism of the G20. China was the first country to openly support the African Union's inclusion in the G20. China has partnered with over 150 countries to jointly build the Belt and Road Initiative and has collaborated with more than 100 countries and international organizations, including the UN, to advance the Global Development Initiative.
With an open and inclusive approach, China consistently shares development opportunities with Global South countries, contributing Chinese insights to global governance. As one online commenter, @Shining237, put it: "China is setting a new bar for the world to follow."
An impressive 92.8 percent of respondents to the CGTN survey believe that China has made significant contributions to enhancing the representation and voice of Global South countries in global governance. Some 91.4 percent of respondents agreed that China is a strong force in promoting the development, revitalization and shared prosperity of Global South countries.
The survey was released on CGTN's English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian platforms, with 7,469 people participating and sharing their views within 24 hours.
