China is set to launch pilot programs for electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft in six cities, said Sun Weiguo, an official at the China Air Transport Association, during a forum in Kunshan, east China's Jiangsu Province, on Monday.
The six pilot cities are Hefei, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Suzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing, according to Xinhua Finance, who quoted industry insiders. The programs will involve local governments in managing airspace below 600 meters, marking a significant step in the burgeoning low-altitude economy.
Since the concept was highlighted in last year's Central Economic Work Conference, the low-altitude aviation sector has seen a surge in support and growth, with 2024 being dubbed the "inaugural year" for China's low-altitude economy.
The Airshow China closed on Sunday in the southern city of Zhuhai featured a dedicated low-altitude economy pavilion this year, showcasing the industry's advancements.
Song Zhiyong, head of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), has emphasized the importance of developing a comprehensive low-altitude service and security system, with plans to enhance airspace management and flight services in partnership with local governments.
