China's 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities officially got underway in the host city of Sanya, Hainan Province. Friday night's opening ceremony brought together the diverse groups in the PRC that will now be showcasing their most traditional sports.

The world's most populous nation has 5,000 years of history to showcase. And while textbooks and television are usually the best ways to convey China's story, a sporting spectacle in Sanya can also get the job done.

Thousands flocked to the state-of-the-art modern stadium to see echoes of times gone by. Performers arrived in their traditional dress, just one aspect of what makes these Games, with the events stepped in generations of skill and determination.

As for the opening itself, the spectators were treated to a diverse display of dances, movements and martial arts. The fact that there have been 11 editions of this event shows that there is an appetite for it, but this one in the capital of Hainan Province has received the most attention.

After the curtain-raiser, the focus now switches to the competition. For the next week, it will be about the spirit and chances to learn from each other, rather than gold medals, meaning the next chapter in the history of these Games, might not be written by the victors.
