Doctor Zhi Xiuyi, deputy secretary general of the Cancer Foundation of China (CFC), emphasized the importance of early detection for treating lung cancer as he spoke on the sidelines of a meeting celebrating the 40th anniversary of the foundation on Saturday.
This year's theme for International Lung Cancer Awareness Month, during which the meeting was held, focuses on "emphasizing early lung cancer screening and standardizing nodule diagnosis and treatment."
Lung cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, with over 80 percent of the cases diagnosed at the mid-to-late stage, often too late for the best curative treatment time, Zhi estimated. He noted that the earlier we detect and treat lung cancer, the greater our chances of saving lives.
Zhi also highlighted groundbreaking advancements, such as using artificial intelligence and liquid biopsies, which are providing hope for early detection of lung cancer.
