The second phase of the 2024-25 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) regular season is set to begin on Wednesday, with the Xinjiang Flying Tigers visiting the Shenzhen Leopards.

Xinjiang have the league's second-best record in the first stage, and with several key players returning to action, they are looking to improve.

The team claimed the CBA title in 2017, but much of that championshp-winning squad has since departed the Flying Tigers over time. However, captain and current MVP Abdusalam Abdurexit remains, expressing pride in what makes the team special:

"I think club culture is key, especially considering our unique geographic location, and team composition," Abdusalam told CGTN Sports Scene's Damion Jones. "We are the only CBA club representing the five northwest provinces and regions, and we have the most ethnic minority players in the entire league. This creates a distinct element for our team, and is a major reason for our special identity."

Over the years, from the youth ranks to the senior team, the Flying Tiger's proportion of ethnic minority players has been as high as 40 percent at its peak, and currently sits at around 30 percent. Club president Guo Jian stated that the spirit of Xinjiang basketball reflects the mindset of the region's native population, with a positive attitude fittingly defined by a phrase common in local dialect – "Lao Dao".

"In Xinjiang, 'Lao Dao' is a sacred term that symbolizes courage, determination, positivity, and perseverance," Guo said. "It embodies the spirit of the people of Xinjiang, and is a core value at our club. While the ultimate goal is the championship, the team focuses equally on building a fearless and determined squad with a tough, fighting spirit. This is the foundation of the club's culture. Rooted deeply in Xinjiang, the team believes its goals will be realized, leading the people and fans of Xinjiang to embrace and enjoy the journey of 'Lao Dao'."

From humble beginnings to a respected and formidable force in the CBA, the Flying Tigers have showcased not only strong basketball prowess, but also relentlessness in pursuit of success. Representing the pride of the Xinjiang region, they are writing the chapters in their story through effort, perseverance, and teamwork.
