Dozens of people were killed on Sunday in clashes between fans at a football match in Nzerekore in southeastern Guinea, hospital sources told AFP, describing scenes of massive violence.

"There are around 100 dead," said a doctor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, adding that bodies are filling the local hospital and morgue. Another doctor said there were "dozens of dead."

The stampede broke out on Sunday afternoon during the final of a local tournament between the Labe and Nzerekore teams in honor of Guinea's military leader, Mamadi Doumbouya, Guinea's Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah said on the X platform.

Local media reported that security forces tried to use teargas to restore calm after the chaos that followed a disputed penalty.

"This (the disputed penalty) angered supporters who threw stones. This is how the security services used tear gas," local media reported. It said several of those killed were children and that some of the injured being treated at a regional hospital are in critical condition.
