The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday urged Paraguay to establish an accurate and comprehensive understanding of the one-China principle.

Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the ministry, made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to a query on Paraguayan foreign minister's recent comments on the Taiwan question.

The one-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a recognized basic norm governing international relations, Lin said, adding that it is also a political foundation and an important prerequisite for China to develop bilateral relations with other countries.

"The principle concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and there is no room for compromise or concessions when it comes to the matter," he said.

Lin urged Paraguay to stand on the side of the majority of countries, stand on the side of international fairness and justice, and make the choices that truly serve the fundamental and long-term interests of its people.
