A Dalmatian pelican, a species under first-class protection in China, was spotted for the first time in Zhangye, northwest China's Gansu Province. The large bird species typically inhabits inland lakes, rivers, marshes and coastal areas. With only 10,000 to 20,000 left globally, the rare bird's appearance highlights the region's biodiversity.
