Shanghai Port of the Chinese Super League (CSL) held Gwangju from South Korea's K League 1 to a 1-1 draw in east China's Shanghai Municipality at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Elite on Tuesday, remaining hopeful for the knockout stage.
Though Shanghai played at home, they were outperformed by the opponents in creating scoring opportunities. Gwangju netted in the 10th minute, but it was ruled offside. Though Shanghai were able to evade some early attacks, they were the first to concede in the 38th minute.
Gustavo's clearance from the box eventually fell to Heo Yool, who slipped at first, but got up immediately and shot to score for his side to lead 1-0 on the road.
Having trailed in the first half, Shanghai took another hit 10 minutes into the second half when Wei Zhen was sent off with a red card for kicking the opponents' player in the face. The home team had to play with only 10 men on the field.
Oscar ultimately saved Shanghai from defeat, breaking into the box in the 74th minute before being taken down by the defender and being awarded a penalty after checking with the video assistant referee (VAR). Oscar took the shot himself and netted to tie the score 1-1 for his team.
Neither side scored again before the end of the game. Shanghai now sit in seventh place with eight points in the East Region after six games. They will face two of the top-three teams, No. 3 Vissel Kobe and No. 1 Yokohama F. Marinos in the final two games. The top-eight of the region will advance to the knockout stage.
