In an exclusive interview with CGTN Sports Scene on Saturday, International Skating Union (ISU) President Kim Jae-youl shared his excitement about the introduction of the Team Crystal Globe as part of the newly launched ISU Short Track World Tour this season. This revamped series features a fresh format, complete with new team identities and redesigned racing suits that showcase unique mascots, reflecting the national symbols and competitive spirit of each participating team.
"There are many changes but one thing that's exciting is that now this season we introduced crystal globe team points," Kim explained. As the first ISU president from outside Europe since the organization was founded in 1892, he emphasized the importance of this development.
"We had crystal globe for individual winner collecting points earned by individual skater throughout the season and reward the top skater who earned the most points this season..." he added. "This is motivating a lot of the skaters. This is also creating more closer bonding and teamwork amongst the team skater. So this one of the exciting changes about the World Tour."
To celebrate the launch of this inaugural edition at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing, the ISU hosted a rare backstage tour, offering a rare glimpse into areas typically reserved for skaters and officials.
Kim was present for the tour and praised China's ability to host such prestigious events. "China has used the legacy of the Olympics very effectively. For example, we had our Short Track World Tour this weekend in the Capital Indoor Stadium. Last weekend was Speed Skating World Cup at Ice Ribbon, and that competition went very well." he noted.
"I just tell you the example. We had two track records, 20 personal best at the Ice Ribbon, which is amazing, it's a testament of how good the quality of the ice is. And here in the Capital Indoor Stadium we had a world record yesterday in the mixed relay. The venues are fantastic, but not only the venue, all the organization, staff, and volunteers, everything is running very well, smoothly. So we are always happy to be back in China for our events.”
As the top short track skaters gear up to return to Beijing for the World Championships from March 14th to 16th, the anticipation builds, with their eyes firmly set on not just claiming world titles but also preparing for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
