Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his family have arrived in Russian capital Moscow and have been granted asylum for humanitarian reasons, local RIA news agency reported Sunday, citing a source from the Kremlin.

Armed opposition forces seized full control of Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday. Assad had been in power since 2000.

Regional countries expressed support for the will and choice of the Syrian people and hoped for a swift restoration of unity and security in the country.
