Chinese players received six trophies at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Player of the Year Awards 2024 in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, on Monday.
Shi Yuqi pocketed his first year-end award as the Men's Singles Player of the Year. Back in June, he replaced Viktor Axelsen of Denmark as World No. 1. Having won four titles at the India, France, Singapore and Indonesia Opens, Shi is looking at 2024 as one of the most successful years of his career.
"I feel good because this is recognition for my year's worth of hard work," Shi said. "I was more spirited this year and performed better, especially in team events. I was determined (to do well) and I achieved good results."
South Korean ace shuttler An Se-young was named the Women's Singles Player of the Year and the Players' Player of the Year on the women's side, becoming the only one to walk away with two trophies.
"I didn't expect I'd receive so much support from other players. I'm delighted to get this award," An said. "New BWF Hall of Famer) Lee Yong-dae is my idol and he told me 'you have so much to celebrate today'. I'm so happy. I have so many people standing by me supporting me and they are my biggest motivation."

Eddy Choong Rising Star of the Year: Alex Lanier (France)
Players' Player of the Year (Men): Viktor Axelsen (Denmark)
