The Syrian constitution and parliament have reportedly been suspended for three months following President Bashar al-Assad's ouster, according to AFP news agency and Sawt al-Asima, a news outlet supportive of militant groups that overthrew the Assad government.
Sawt al-Asima did not provide details on how the suspension would be implemented. While AFP reported that "a judicial and human rights committee will be established to examine the constitution and then introduce amendments," citing interim government spokesperson Obaida Arnaout.
Syria is undergoing a major transition after the military forces that recently overthrew Assad over the weekend formed a new transitional government.
Mohammed al-Bashir, a relatively unknown figure who previously led a small region in northwestern Syria, was appointed as the head of the transitional government, which is expected to oversee Syria until March 2025.
Assad and his family are in Moscow and have been granted asylum "out of humanitarian considerations." The Russian Foreign Ministry earlier this week confirmed that Assad has left Syria and resigned as the country's president while calling for a peaceful transfer of power.
