China's national flag was raised and then lowered to half-mast during a memorial ceremony in Nanjing City, east China, on Friday to honor the victims of the Nanjing Massacre, who were killed during Japanese aggression in World War II. Three guards of honor raised the national flag to the top of the flagpole. After a few moments, the flag was slowly lowered to half-mast, marking the start of National Memorial Day for the victims of the Nanjing Massacre. In 2014, China's top legislature designated December 13 as National Memorial Day for the victims, commemorating the day Japanese troops captured Nanjing on December 13, 1937. The Japanese invaders brutally killed approximately 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers over six weeks.
