Winding rivers and sprawling lakes dot the grasslands of Sichuan's Zoige Wetland National Nature Reserve, weaving together a rich ecosystem that is home to many endangered bird species. Known as the "fairies of the plateau," black-necked cranes are sacred symbols of wisdom, purity, happiness, and longevity in Chinese culture. These rare birds, with their elegant long legs and striking black-and-white plumage, gracefully roam the highlands of Sichuan.

As spring breathes new life into the wetlands, black-necked cranes begin to nest and raise their young among the grasses and reeds. By summer, curious little chicks are hatched under the watchful eyes of their parents.

Ruke, a 60-year-old ranger at the Zoige Wetland National Nature Reserve, is one of the longest-serving guardians of the black-necked cranes. His dedication to safeguarding these majestic birds and preserving the wetland ecosystem has inspired his son, Rinchen Dorje, to follow in his footsteps as a ranger. Though they live apart, Rinchen sometimes visits, and together they patrol the wetlands, sharing their commitment to conservation across generations.
