The Russian Defense Ministry said it has launched a massive strike with high-precision, long-range air- and sea-based weapons against "critical facilities of Ukraine's fuel and energy infrastructure that support the military-industrial complex."

In a statement published on Friday, the ministry said its strike was in response to Ukraine's recent use of American-made ATACMS missiles to attack the Russian territory of Taganrog.

"The strike's objective was achieved. All facilities were hit," the statement added. 

The announcement came after Ukraine on Friday reported one of the largest Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy system in over two years, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saying 93 Russian missiles and nearly 200 drones were detected and Ukrainian air defenses managed to shoot down 81 missiles.

Ukraine's DTEK energy company also said on Friday that Ukrainian power plants were "severely damaged" in a wave of Russian missile strikes.
