South Korea's parliament on Friday advanced the time to vote on the second impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol by one hour, according to multiple media outlets.

It was reported to the plenary session of the unicameral National Assembly that 300 lawmakers were scheduled to cast secret ballots at 4 p.m. local time Saturday (0700 GMT), one hour earlier than the previous plan.

The main liberal opposition party, the Democratic Party, and five other minor parties submitted the second motion to impeach Yoon on Thursday and reported it to the plenary session earlier in the day.

Under the constitution, the impeachment bill must be initiated by a majority of lawmakers and approved by at least two-thirds of the National Assembly legislators.

The opposition bloc will need eight votes from the 108 ruling party lawmakers to pass the motion.

Yoon was named as a suspect on an insurrection charge over his declaration of an emergency martial law on the night of December 3 that was revoked by the National Assembly hours later.
