The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has provided $100,000 in emergency humanitarian cash assistance to earthquake-hit Vanuatu, Xinhua news agency reported Friday, citing the Chinese Embassy in Vanuatu.
A magnitude-7.3 quake struck off the Pacific Island nation's main island on Tuesday, toppling concrete buildings in Port Vila and setting off landslides.
The earthquake, described by locals as a "violent, high-frequency vertical shake," left at least 14 people dead and more than 200 injured so far after buildings collapsed, and an initial tsunami warning has since been lifted.
"Today we have received $100,000 of emergency humanitarian cash assistance from the Red Cross Society of China, which will be handed over to Vanuatu on Saturday," Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu Li Minggang told Xinhua, adding China will continue to provide assistance within its capacity based on the situation and the needs of Vanuatu.
The Chinese embassy has kept close contact with the government of Vanuatu to learn about its rescue and relief needs and provide timely support, Li told Xinhua.
