China defeats Ukraine in the World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup Men's Division 2 quarterfinals in Istanbul, Türkiye, December 20, 2024. /World Aquatics
China moved past Ukraine 17-11 to reach the semifinals of the World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup Men's Division 2 in Istanbul, Türkiye, on Friday.
The Chinese side entered the contest as group leaders after beating Great Britain and Portugal. They controlled the first three quarters by margins of 5-4, 4-2, 6-1, as Chen Zhongxian and Chen Yimin emerged as the team's top scorers with four goals apiece.
Ukraine managed to take the last quarter 4-2, but despite Oktavian Veklyuk scoring four goals to push his total in the tournament to 14, the gap was too big to overcome. China converted three of four penalty opportunities, while Ukraine capitalized on both of its chances.
China will face Germany in the last four later on Saturday.
