For six decades Wei Deyou, a border guard in the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, patrolled China’s remote northwestern border in Salbulake, braving giant mosquitoes in the summer and minus 40 degree Celsius temperatures in the winter. Now at age 83, Wei has passed the torch to his daughter. “No matter how difficult, we must guard the motherland,” he said.
