Over the past year, the Village Super League and Village BA continued to emerge as major sporting competitions in China. The 2024 editions took place from March to October, and CGTN broadcast both events live in English for the first time, underscoring their growing international appeal. The two leagues are not just celebrations of athletic ability, but also examples of ways to integrate culture and tourism, while helping spark rural economic revitalization as well.

The Village Basketball Association, also nicknamed as "Cun BA", traces its roots back to the local Miao ethnic group's "June 6th" competition. After going viral with 1.5 billion views in 2022, and soaring to 55 billion in 2023, the third-year event is both a sporting showcase and a cultural carnival, transforming the economy of Taipan Village, and beyond. The organizers also promote local specialties, by using those items as competition prizes, in order to attract tourists and boost sales. According to official data, the 2024 VBA boosted Taijiang County's tourist trips by 32.12%, and tourism revenue by 32.67%. And from January to November, the area welcomed more than 3.6 million visitors, while pulling in 4.2 billion yuan.

About 200 kilometers away in Rongjiang County, the Village Super League has also seen explosive growth. Since surging in popularity last year, the football event has attracted more than 78 billion views online, drew in 11.69 million tourists, and generated 13.07 billion yuan in tourism revenue for the area. Looking ahead, Rongjiang County is set to serve as the host site for the first national VSL event next year. The organizers are also planning to host a World Cup style competition for football enthusiasts from around the globe in 2028. And by cultivating international collaboration, the area seeks to hold up the Village Super League as a new model for grassroots sports development, and rural revitalization in China.
