Layue, the twelfth month of the traditional Chinese calendar, begins on December 31 this year. It is also known for its numerous traditional customs, making it one of the most culturally rich months of the year. A folk song passed down through generations expresses the traditions that span from this month to the Chinese New Year period.
"Children, don't rush; right after Laba, the New Year is on its way." Laba marks the very beginning of the season. Celebrated on the eighth day of Layue, the Laba Festival is marked by the enjoyment of Laba porridge – a delicious blend of grains, peanuts, chestnuts, red dates, lotus seeds, and other ingredients – that is an essential part of the celebration.
