In December 2014, the first phase of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project went into operation. It's part of a massive undertaking comprising three routes that is transferring much-needed water to the relatively dry north of China. President Xi Jinping has shown a keen interest in the project. In a May 2021 visit to a community that had been resettled to make way for it, he described them as the "well-diggers" whose contribution should never be forgotten.
