A Chinese actor reported missing near the Thailand-Myanmar border over the weekend has been confirmed as a victim of human trafficking after initial investigation, according to the Royal Thai Police on Wednesday.

Tatchai Pitaneelaboot, inspector-general of the Royal Thai Police, told local media that Wang Xing is set to be sent back to China within the next one or two days.

According to Tatchai, Wang was lured out of China by a scam offering an acting gig in Thailand but only found out it was a trap after ending up in a "neighboring country."

Tatchai added the Thai authorities will protect and take care of Wang in accordance with relevant procedures and will coordinate with the Chinese Embassy in Thailand to facilitate his return to China – a process expected to take no more than one to two days – when he and his relatives are ready.

Wang was reported missing on Sunday and rescued on Tuesday. The Chinese Consulate General in Chiang Mai said earlier that Thailand's Tak Immigration Office informed them on Tuesday afternoon that Wang was in their custody, and that the office was currently conducting necessary inquiries.

The incident has drawn widespread public concern in both China and Thailand.
