A magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Dingri County in Xigaze, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, on Tuesday morning, claiming 126 lives and injuring 188 others.
Over 10,000 rescuers braved freezing temperatures to comb through the rubble, and the search and rescue phase has concluded. Efforts have now shifted to resettling displaced residents and beginning post-disaster reconstruction.
At an average altitude of 4,500 meters, Dingri County lies near the northern base camp of Mount Qomolangma, the world's highest peak, presenting unique challenges for both residents and rescue teams.
