World No. 5 women's singles tennis player Zheng Qinwen of China beat Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-2, 6-2 in a charity exhibition match at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia, ahead of the Australian Open on Wednesday.
The battle was mainly between Zheng's signature powerful baseline game and Svitolina's rich experience. In the end, the 22-year-old Chinese star outperformed her 30-year-old opponent with better agility and energy on the court. The match also displayed Zheng's efforts in trying to improve her skills in the past two months. She has added more precision and consistency to her skills.
In another exhibition match, men's singles world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain was handed a defeat by local star Alex de Minaur who won in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 10-5.
Four-time Grand Slam winner Alcaraz was leading 4-1 at one stage in the opening set but De Minaur bounced back and broke Alcaraz twice to take the opener. Alcaraz clinched one set back in the second to tie the match 1-1, but was outlasted by De Minaur in the super tiebreak.
"I love the competition, I love these kind of matches against this kind of players," Alcaraz said. "I was really good at home chilling for a month. Coming back here and suffering on court, playing against Alex is great but at the same time playing against Alex is great, but we wanted to take more days before praising him but it was a great warm-up I guess."
