The Legend of the White Snake is one of China's most beloved and enduring folk tales, blending elements of romance, tragedy and supernatural intrigue. The story, which has been passed down through centuries, tells of the passionate love between a human, Xu Xian, and a white snake spirit who has transformed into a beautiful woman, Bai Suzhen.
This act performed by actors of the Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe depicts the battle in the water.
In this act, Fa Hai, a formidable monk who doesn't believe in love between man and spirit, imprisoned Xu Xian. To save her husband, Bai and her sister Xiaoqing, who was a green snake, fight with Fa Hai in front of the Jinshan Temple where Xu Xian is jailed.
In the end, despite her incredible powers, she is overwhelmed by Fa Hai's spiritual authority.
