Layue, the twelfth month of the traditional Chinese calendar, began on December 31. It is also known for its many traditional customs, making it one of the most culturally rich months of the year. One of these customs is to steam buns.

In ancient tradition, cooking with fire was forbidden during the first few days of the New Year. To prepare for the occasion, families would steam plenty of buns in advance. It was believed that the family with the best buns would have the best prospects for the coming year.
