China's Wang Xiyu, Zhang Shuai and Wang Yafan failed to make it past the women's singles second round at the Australian Open on a looming Thursday.

The results came a day after China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen suffered a shock against German veteran Laura Siegemund 7-6, 6-3. Chinese players have crashed out of all singles contention in Melbourne, including eight in the women's and three in the men's.

On Thursday, Wang Xiyu came closest to breaking the spell for Chinese players by pulling back a set against Emma Navarro, but couldn't resist the comeback of the World No.8, as the American battled to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win on Margaret Court Arena.

Wang broke first in the second set to lead 3-1, and maintained the momentum to drag the match into a decider where she led early again 2-0.

But Navarro levelled the set 2-2, and again 4-4, before she held serve in a crucial ninth game to lead 5-4, and eventually broke the unseeded Wang to win the match.

Earlier in the day, Zhang was beaten by Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-1, and Wang Yafan fell to Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-0.
