Unlike their northern counterparts who eat glutinous rice dumplings during the Dragon Boat Festival, the people of Jiangxi Province in east China have preserved the custom of making alkaline rice dumplings for the Chinese New Year. Golden and tender, they symbolize family prosperity in the coming year.
