The Zhejiang Golden Bulls beat three-time defending Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) champions the Liaoning Flying Leopards 101-88 in Shaoxing, east China's Zhejiang Province, on Sunday, securing their second straight win.
Gabe York was the best-performing player for Zhejiang with 31 points, eight rebounds and six assists. He knocked down six triples to score 23 of the team's 27 points in the second quarter, keeping the contest close in the opening half.
The Golden Bulls began the proceedings with a 7-0 run, but Kyle Fogg's layup not only ended Liaoning's scoring drought, but also ignited his team's energy at both ends of the court. The visiting side's tough defense left the hosts struggling to make shots, and reduced the deficit to two points, 20-18, at the end of the first quarter.
The Flying Leopards surged into the lead early in the second quarter. Dez Wells and James Webb combined for 17 points to extend the edge for the reigning titleholders to a dozen at 42-30.
York stepped up and shot 7-for-9 from the field, however, making sure that his side only trailed by two, 49-47, at halftime.
The third quarter started with five rough minutes for Zhejiang, which scored only five points in that timespan. Then it was Liaoning's turn to deal with a scoring drought. The home team outscored its opponents 8-2 in the final two minutes, and entered the fourth quarter holding an eight-point lead, 78-70.
The Flying Leopards put together a 6-0 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but their disappointing shooting performance from downtown cost them dearly. They missed 25 of their 34 three-pointers on the night, while the Golden Bulls drained half of the same number of outside shots.
The defending champions have not been in their best form since the second phase of the regular season got underway in late November, and have lost eight of their 12 games against the other teams ranked in the league's top 12.
