In Kyiv, explosions were heard across the city as air defences activated in response to Russian attacks.

As the third anniversary of the conflict approaches, both sides are ramping up their operations.

Our reporter Yang Chengxi is in Kyiv, close to one of latest airstrikes.

YANG CHENGXI Kyiv "Loud explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on early Saturday morning. Authorities had issued warnings about incoming ballistic missiles. We're here on the scene, where a crater behind me marks the aftermath of the attack. Cars have been destroyed, water pipes ruptured, and a nearby commercial establishment sustained damage. The incident also disrupted operations at the nearby subway station, forcing trains to skip this stop temporarily. According to the city's regional military administration, at least four people have lost their lives."

PAVLO PETROV Spokesperson, State Emergency Service of Kyiv "In total, ten cars were destroyed, and as you can see, many nearby windows are broken."

YANG CHENGXI Kyiv "All around this residential community nearby are sounds of hammers, tinkering and repairing."

It was very scary, said Dasha. This is the fourth time an explosion has happened in the past year and a half since her family moved here.

DASHA Local Resident "All the previous times, the blasts only shattered the glass on the balcony. But this time, they shattered every window. We're packing up and moving in with our relatives until we can find another apartment. It's impossible to live here."

Air raid sirens are a constant in this city, a grim reminder of the ongoing threat from airborne attacks. These daily risks have forced residents to adapt. Many street-side businesses are now equipped with emergency generators to prepare for blackouts, while schools and other institutions have set up underground shelters to protect against airstrikes here in Kyiv.
