The Taliban-led Afghan government announced on Tuesday that the United States had released an Afghan prisoner in exchange for U.S. detainees, with Qatar brokering the deal.
"An Afghan fighter Khan Mohammad imprisoned in America has been released in exchange for American citizens and returned to the country," the Afghan Foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that Mohammad had been serving a life sentence after being arrested "almost two decades ago".
The Afghan Foreign Ministry has praised Qatar's mediating role and expressed appreciation for U.S. efforts, emphasizing that such steps could normalize relations between the two countries.
