Tsai Fu-hsiung grew up beside the temple of Mazu in Beigang on the island of Taiwan. Mazu is the Chinese goddess of the sea. When Tsai learned that she came originally from Meizhou Island in Fujian Province, across the Taiwan Strait, he experienced a powerful desire to visit her ancestral temple there.
