The Beikong Royal Fighters defeated the Guangzhou Loong Lions 116-113 on the road in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, on Wednesday, extending the home team's losing streak to six games in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).
The home side's veteran guard Guo Ailun shot 13-for-25 from the field, including 3-for-9 from outside, and 11-for-13 from the free throw line to score 40 points. The outburst marks his first time reaching the 40-point mark since April 7, 2022, a span of 1,017 days.
The first quarter was close, as Guangzhou opened with a 11-6 lead, before Beikong replied an 8-2 run. Grant Riller made a jumper in the final seconds to put the visitors ahead 28-27. The American then helped the visitors rattle off a 15-6 run at the beginning of the second quarter, en route to taking a double-digit lead at 43-33.
Guo stepped up to pour in eight straight points for the Loong Lions. He was joined by Liu Yancheng, who knocked down back-to-back triples, as the hosts tied the score at 49-49. In the closing minutes of the half, Jared Sullinger and Zhu Songwei repeatedly charged into paint to put the Royal Fighters back in front, 68-59.
Guo again became Guangzhou's go-to-guy in the third quarter, contributing 14 points and draining two triples. His efforts helped the Loong Lions cut the deficit to just three points, 94-91, heading into the final quarter.
Guangzhou's rally continued as Guo demonstrated his orchestrating skills by feeding Li Xiangbo and Tahjere McCall for a series of layups. The Loong Lions led 111-104 with less than five minutes left, before Zhang Fan and Zhu combined to spark a 10-0 run for Beikong, which went back on top 114-111.
Guo's penetration earned him two free throws, and he made both to keep the game alive for the hosts, before Zhang did likewise for the Royal Fighters.
Trailing 116-113, McCall took the final shot for Guangzhou with three seconds left, but his three-point attempt was no good, and Beikong hung on for its fourth straight win.
