More than 270 million inter-regional trips are expected to be made in China on Friday, the 11th day of the Spring Festival travel rush, known as chunyun.

According to data released by transportation authorities of 2025 chunyun, the number of inter-regional trips on Friday was estimated to hit 272.74 million. Among these, there will be 14.2 million passenger trips by rail, 255.47 million by highway, 680,000 by waterway and 2.39 million by civil aviation.

The data also showed that Thursday registered 256,519,000 inter-regional trips made across the country, an increase of 9.7 percent from the previous day and up 32.3 percent year on year.

About 9 billion inter-regional trips are expected to be made in China during the annual travel rush, rising 7 percent year on year, according to a national teleconference held at the end of December.

This annual travel rush is usually a period of high transportation demand as people return to their hometowns for family reunions. The 2025 chunyun will last from January 14 to February 22.

This year's travel rush also represents China's first chunyun after UNESCO inscribed the Spring Festival on its intangible cultural heritage list in December.
