In May 1989, a flotilla of 20 fishing boats set sail from Nanfang'ao village on the island of Taiwan. Its destination was Meizhou Island in Fujian Province, southern China. On board the vessels were more than 200 people who were bringing with them several effigies of China's much-loved sea goddess, Mazu. They had resolved to return Mazu to her home on the opposite side of the Taiwan Strait, despite the fact that cross-strait travel was not permitted by the Taiwan authorities at the time. Tune in for the CGTN documentary "The Journey of the Goddess" on February 3 to discover how a group of ordinary fishermen undertook a voyage that became a pivotal event in re-launching cross-strait communication.
