Shanghai has rolled out services for the HPV vaccine after China's National Medical Products Administration approved its use for males earlier this month. The vaccine is for men aged between nine and twenty-six years and helps prevent certain HPV-related cancers and diseases. Three other HPV vaccines available in China only target women. Experts say use of the vaccines for both genders could expand immunization coverage and better achieve herd immunity.
XU LING Director, Central Hospital of Minhang District in Shanghai "We suggest males who smoke or have low immunity to have the vaccination for precautionary measures. We also hope the vaccination age range will be expanded soon."
Parent of child vaccinee "I paid close attention to HPV vaccines before so I made an appointment for my son as soon as I knew this vaccine could be used on males. Getting vaccinated against HPV is not only responsible for the health of children, but also reduces the risk of viral transmission, which offers protection for the health of those around them."
HUANG ZHUOYING Director, Immunization Planning Institute of Shanghai CDC "Now the HPV vaccine is available at our district, community clinics and private hospitals. The infection peak of HPV-related diseases is between the age of 18 to 24, so the suggested vaccination age is between 9 and 26."
