During the Chinese New Year holiday, art inspired by the Chinese God of Wealth is making waves in both traditional and modern spaces. Artist duo Pang Fei and Pang Minghao have reimagined this iconic figure with playful designs that bring a contemporary spin on a cultural classic.

Traditionally seen as a sacred figure symbolizing prosperity, the God of Wealth now appears in unexpected forms: lounging on a sofa or peeking out from behind a mahjong tile. These figurines have become highly sought-after holiday decorations, admired not only for their charm but also for the deeper cultural resonance they bring to modern life.

“Collectors love the God of Wealth,” said Zhao Mingyue, artistic consultant at Goude Art. “People can’t help but stop and look.”

The appeal of the designs lies in their ability to balance old and new. “These figures challenge the usual image of the God of Wealth,” said customer Hu Tianhe. “One lying on a sofa symbolizes earning money with ease – something we all hope for.”

Pang Fei and Pang Minghao have carefully preserved the traditional elements of the character, such as the official hat, red robe, and mustache, while streamlining the design with minimalist curves. “We wanted him to feel relatable and fun,” explains Pang Fei. “This way, the God of Wealth becomes a part of everyday life.”

The duo’s creations have gained widespread popularity and are now sold in over 50 stores nationwide. But their work isn’t just about art; it reflects a broader cultural movement.

“These pieces bridge ancient beliefs and contemporary design,” according to museologist Shen Yi from Beijing Folk Museum. “They give a fresh perspective to a figure that has inspired loyalty and integrity for centuries.”

By blending tradition with modernity, Pang Fei and Pang Minghao’s art redefines how symbols of prosperity can resonate in the modern world, offering a touch of playfulness to age-old blessings.
