In Xizang Autonomous Region, locals are also ushering in the New Year according to the Tibetan calendar. Our reporter Yang Jinghao visited the earthquake-affected region to see how residents celebrate this important holiday in traditional ways.

While people across the country are celebrating the Spring Festival, residents of Shigatse in Xizang are welcoming the Tibetan New Year known as "Losar" with a special tradition – eating Gutu, on Tuesday night.

"Gutu" is a festive dish, a hearty soup made with wheat flour dough balls and various ingredients, such as highland barley, dried cheese, and yak meat.

SHERAB Resident of Dingri County, Xizang Autonomous Region "We eat 'Gutu' on the night of the 29th day of the 12th month in the Tibetan calendar. Afterward, we perform a special ritual to drive away evil spirits and usher in a prosperous year."

Here in Dingri County, which was hit by a powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake three weeks ago, the tradition is still observed, even though celebrations could only take place in temporary shelters.

Lhundrup, a firefighter, has been involved in disaster relief work since day one and will not be able to reunite with his family for the celebration.

LHUNDRUP Firefighter "In the initial days, we focused on transporting supplies and carrying out other rescue tasks assigned to us. Recently, we've shifted to the next phase, concentrating on post-disaster reconstruction. I volunteered right away to stay and make my own contribution to the local community."

While the scars of the disaster remain visible, life is gradually returning to normal, thanks to the efforts of people like Lhundrup.

LHUNDRUP Firefighter "As a local, I truly wish I could go home for the New Year. But as a firefighter, I must put the needs of others first. This is our responsibility."

The local government has provided various supplies to ensure that every family can enjoy a warm celebration during this special time.

NYIMA TSRING Resident of Dingri County, Xizang Autonomous Region "We've received things like rice, flour, potatoes, meat, instant noodles and canned goods… we have everything we need."
