The 2025 Spring Festival film season witnessed record-high box-office takings in Chinese movie history, as the revenue (including pre-sold tickets) exceeded 5 billion yuan (about $698 million) as of 3 p.m. Thursday.

Sequels took center stage at the Spring Festival season this year, with four of the six seasonal movie releases based on previous story lines, including "Ne Zha 2," "Detective Chinatown 1900," "Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force," and "Boonie Bears: Future Reborn."

The new releases cover a diverse range of genres and themes, from mythology, epic tales, and animation, to war stories, action-packed adventures, martial arts, comedy and science fiction. This rich variety ensures that there is something for everyone to enjoy at the cinema. As of 3 p.m. on Thursday, "Ne Zha 2" had notched up 927 million yuan ($127 million) in total box-office takings, leading the Spring Festival season. The sequel to the 2019 animated blockbuster "Ne Zha," the movie tells the story of a demon child reborn after a fierce fight and his struggle to defeat the four sea dragon kings to protect his homeland.
