World No. 1 men's singles table tennis player Wang Chuqin of China began the Year of the Snake with a 3-0 victory over Yukiya Uda of Japan in the first round of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Singapore Smash on Sunday.
The match got off to a surprisingly tough start for Wang, as Uda led 9-6, but the Chinese star recovered to tie things up at 9-9, before scoring two straight points to secure a 1-0 advantage in the match.
The second game was easier for Wang, who built an early lead and continued to extend his edge, claiming the frame 11-5. Uda tried to fight back in the third and kept the score close until the end. Sitting on a 10-9 lead, Wang sealed the deal with a powerful smash. He will face Singaporean wild-card Koen Pang next.
Two more Chinese players also advanced to the second round in the men's singles event. Qualifier Huang Youzheng beat Iran's Noshad Alamian 14-12, 12-10, 11-4 and will face German No. 8 seed Patrick Franziska next. Chen Yuanyu knocked out Paraguay's Marcelo Aguirre 11-7, 11-7, 2-11, 11-6 to set up a contest against South Korean 12th seed Jang Woo-jin in the next round.
On the women's side, Chinese No. 4 seed Chen Xingtong cruised past Lam Yee Lok of China's Hong Kong 11-3, 11-7, 11-3 in the first round. Second-seeded Wang Manyu beat Dina Meshref of Egypt 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 to progress. And No. 15 seed Kuai Man overcame Fu Yu of Portugal 11-6, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7.
