Kyrgyzstan edged Kuwait 9-8 in overtime to claim victory in the opening men's ice hockey contest at the Harbin Asian Winter Games on Monday, with four days to go until the continental competition's Opening Ceremony.
Anton Tcibin and Ilia Drozdetskikh each scored two goals to help Kuwait take a 5-3 lead in the first period. The Kuwaitis later extended their edge to 7-3, but Kyrgyzstan tied the game at 8-8 in the final minute of the third period.
Kyrgyz captain Mamed Seifulov scored just 19 seconds into overtime to complete the comeback victory.
"It was a hard win for us. We arrived here two days ago and still need adaptation. I am sure we will be better in the next game," said Kyrgyzstan forward Sultan Ismanov. "The atmosphere for us was good. I want to say thanks to our fans and the Chinese people."
Five ice hockey games are scheduled for Tuesday, including China facing South Korea in the men's event at 8:00 PM local time.
