Mainland says DPP's reliance on U.S. harms Taiwan's industrial growth

A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday said Taiwan region's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities' proposed response measures to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff threats are nothing but "selling out Taiwan region to please the U.S."

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks during a regular press conference when asked to comment on the four "response measures" proposed by DPP authorities to "strengthen industrial cooperation between Taiwan region and the U.S."

The DPP authorities proposed the measures after Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on imports of computer chips and semiconductors, reiterating his claim that "98 percent of the chip business has gone to Taiwan" and expressing his desire to bring these industries back to the United States. 

Zhu said the facts have repeatedly shown that the more the DPP authorities rely on the U.S., the more harm they bring to Taiwan region.

Zhu said the measures undermined the foundation of industrial development in Taiwan region and sacrificed the well-being of its residents.

Zhu also criticized the U.S. for its unilateralism and trade protectionism, stating that such actions "once again prove that the U.S. always prioritizes its own interests above all else."
