Village horse racing: Galloping for a prosperous new year

Without saddles or stirrups, villagers whipped their reins and galloped through a narrow street in Pingding County, Yangquan City, in northern China's Shanxi Province. The horse racing, known as "Pao Ma Pai" in Chinese, is a traditional custom held on the 16th day of the first lunar month to celebrate the Chinese New Year. In 2024, UNESCO included it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
