Understrength China managed to secure an 86-78 win over Guam on the road in the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, clinching the top spot in Pool C and earning a place in the main event set to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 5 to 17.
The match, which tipped off on Sunday, saw China implement significant roster changes after already securing their qualification.
After Guam scored the very first point of the game, China quickly took control and maintained their lead throughout. However, Guam displayed an aggressive spirit, finishing the first quarter trailing narrowly at 19-16. In the final quarter, Guam found themselves down by as much as 16 points, and the situation looked grim for the home team.
Despite this, veteran Tai Wesley captivated the crowd with his performance, ultimately scoring a game-high 32 points, which brought the deficit down to single digits. Nevertheless, China held firm, with Zhu Junlong hitting a crucial three-pointer from the corner that effectively sealed the victory.
Yang Hansen led the Chinese team with an impressive 19 points and nine rebounds, while team captain Zhang Rui contributed 15 points, along with five assists and five rebounds.
China concluded the qualifiers with a 5-1 record, advancing to the Asia Cup alongside second-place Japan.
