Before 1998, Hongsibu in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was a desolate area shrouded in sandstorms. It all changed with the Yanghuang Irrigation Project, which used a four-level pumping system to lift water from the Yellow River to a height of 300 meters, creating the country's largest centralized ecological resettlement area. Nurtured by the river, the fate of 230,000 people was forever changed.
